Unicorns Do Exist

Arabian Oryx, a magnificent creature that I really love, according to some historians the myth of the fabled one-horned creature, the unicorn may have started with the Arabian oryx, when the oryx is looked at from side, it appears as if it has one large horn on its head. For thousands of years these creatures were hunted as shown in cave drawings, and the hunt for these creatures kept on going on and on with the widely spread basic hunting weapons known to people at the time, till the beginning of the twentieth century, sophisticated methods of hunting weapons came in use, hunting firearms were used by humans and the Arabian Oryxes were hunted more frequently than ever before, resulting in its gradual extinction from the wild in Arabia and by the year 1972, it was completely extinct in the middle east.

In 1982 Many countries attempted to reintroduce the oryx to the Arabian wild and Oman was the very first to begin with this initiative, and dedicating a vast park for oryxes in Al-Wusta region, naming it the "Oryx Sanctuary" and brought the first herd from San Diego Safari Park. This was very successful and their numbers started growing over the years, oryx numbers reached its peak in Oman in 1996, 450 oryxes, here is the sad part and really saddens me, the numbers of the oryxes started dwindling again over the years because of poaching and illegal hunting, their numbers dropped down to 65 in 2007, later the Omani government announced plans to prospect for oil in the region and thus reducing 90% of the the original oryx sanctuary size.

I've met a person once who bragged about hunting down an oryx, and when I asked him  if he's aware that these animals are endangered, he said he feels guilty for doing so but then started talking about the hunting experience and what was it like, like if its an achievement of sort; there is no limit to the stupidity of mankind. and unfortunately there is no cure for stupidity.

But to end on a bright note, in 2011 the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) announced that the Arabian oryx population has exceeded 1000, in reservations located in Bahrain, Qatar and UAE, and the IUCN no longer considers the Arabian Oryx “endangered” and has been taken off that list to a less-serious category which is “vulnerable”. According to the IUCN this is the very first time a species that was previously classified as extinct in the wild has improved to such extent. :)

Double Standards In Politics and Media?

(Israeli President and Prime Minister refuse to meet Jimmy Carter over his "anti-Israel" stance), as they claim.

I find it fascinating how some politicians and media react regarding certain matters, for instance this occurrence.. Let's imagine if it was the complete opposite, if Jimmy Carter refuses to meet  Netanyahu because of his government atrocities against the Palestinians, I bet you all hell would break loose on Carter for such thing.

I might be branded as an anti-semite for this post but no I am not.
Just think about it.

Road Rage!

While Omanis are known to be calm and peace loving however the same cannot be said when you meet them on the streets in their vehicles, maybe because of the amount of oppressed negative feelings that has been accumulating for years and years inside of them and the only way these feelings get out is on the street and the person who's on the receiving side probably is one of the unluckiest person on earth when it happens! Of course not all Omanis are this way, there are expats living in Oman go through the same thing, road rage exists worldwide. Jokes aside, road rage can turn very nasty and harmful, drivers should be more reasonable and forgiving to acts by other drivers like cutting them off, yes what they did is wrong but is it worth it to act aggressively, it's the little things that other drivers do that can make us so mad and might cause us to go into a violent outburst.
We need to deal with the anger and frustration before things escalates and becomes serious.

Salvador Dalí?!

The name says it all, he is my favorite artist of all time!

To those of you who don't know Dalí, he is an artist from Spain, most people know him for the melting clocks. His artworks are known for being very unusual and strange, like if it is something from a dream, he is a pioneer of this kind of art, which is called surrealism.

Surrealism is destructive, but it destroys only what it considers to be shackles limiting our vision.
- Salvador Dalí

This is a poster I made (with a lot help from my friend Adnan) as an assignment for my Visual Communication course, it lists four of my favorite artworks of Dalí:
_________

  • The Persistence of Memory, 1931
  • Meditative Rose, 1958
  • City of Drawers, 1936
  • Sleep, 1937

Movie Review: Furious 7

Yes, it's finally here..
Another installment in the popular franchise, Fast and the Furious
The long awaited installment in the popular Fast and Furious film series has arrived!

"we look so cool facing this way"
Personally I was never a fan of this film franchise, I did enjoy couple of its movies individually but I wouldn't go around recommending them to my friends and the people I know to go and watch this movie UNLESS they are into mindless action flicks.

Keep in mind this was Paul Walker's last movie, he died in a horrific car crash in 2013 and to be honest I was quite surprised that the producers even went ahead with making this movie, I thought what was going to happen is either the whole series gets scrapped and left as it is since an integral part of the cast has passed away or re-shoot the film and scrap the scenes he was in, kill off his character off-screen but surprisingly they didn't, they happen to have shot scenes with the late Paul Walker, about half of the movie with him and the remaining scenes were completed by his siblings with the addition of CGI.

Well, now to the movie... I'm not going to spoil much and won't get into the plot, (SPOILER ALERT: UBER UNREALISTIC ACTION SCENES AND PLENTY OF KABOOM-KABOOM EXPLOSIONS) ... The film is amusing to any film-goer who happens to enjoy cars and action films but I'm sure many will dislike the superhuman scenes, where the actors do things that are beyond laws of physics, there are good hand-to-hand fight scenes in the movie, I liked the fight scene between Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, Ronda Rousey who happens to be real-life fighter, has her own fight scene against Michelle Rodriguez when the group goes to Abu Dhabi.

About that, the portrayal of the Middle East in this movie, really annoyed, the whole scenes in UAE showed the same negative stereotypical portrayal the Arab world, stupid scenes with wild parties, filthy rich Arabs, dancers coated in gold wearing nothing but skimpy clothes, I don't get it how UAE officials were fine with that? I understand the whole "modern thingy" and it's an opportunity to show off UAE to the world but in this manner?

No matter how much I bash this movie, there are devoted fans to the fast & furious film series and take the whole franchise very seriously (despite its plot holes and uncountable flaws) but I have to admit I did enjoy the film in a way, it's one of those films that before you begin viewing... You have to switch off your brain, grab your popcorn and enjoy.
